Best NC Mountain Elopement Spots in Western North Carolina
If you’re dreaming of eloping in the mountains, you’re in the right place. The best NC mountain elopement spots are right here in Western North Carolina, where sweeping Blue Ridge views, cascading waterfalls, and golden mountain light make for some of the most breathtaking ceremonies in the country. As a wedding and elopement photographer based in Morganton, NC, I’ve documented love stories across these mountains and I’m here to share my favorite locations with you.
As a wedding and elopement photographer based in Morganton, NC, I’ve had the privilege of documenting some truly incredible love stories across these mountains. Whether you’re planning an intimate sunrise ceremony or a sunset elopement with just the two of you, here are some of my favorite spots in Western North Carolina to make it happen.
1. Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most iconic locations in all of North Carolina, and for good reason. Stretching across the western part of the state, it offers overlook after overlook of jaw-dropping mountain views. Fall elopements here are absolutely magical with the foliage, but honestly every season brings its own kind of beauty. Sunrise is the best time to shoot here. The light is soft, the crowds are minimal, and the mist hanging over the mountains is something you’ll never forget.
Best for: Sunrise elopements, fall foliage, panoramic views
2. Linville Gorge
Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Linville Gorge is one of Western North Carolina’s most dramatic landscapes. Towering cliffs, dense forest, and the Linville River winding through the gorge below make this an incredible backdrop for couples who love adventure. It’s a bit more of a hike to get to the best spots, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.
Best for: Adventure-loving couples, dramatic landscapes, summer elopements
3. Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather Mountain near Linville, NC offers some of the most dramatic high-elevation scenery in the entire state. The famous Mile High Swinging Bridge sits at over 5,000 feet and frames the most stunning mountain backdrops you can imagine. It does require a park entrance fee, but the views are absolutely unmatched.
Best for: High elevation drama, unique landmarks, spring and summer
4. Black Balsam Knob
If you want to feel like you’re on top of the world, Black Balsam Knob is your spot. Located near Waynesville, NC off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this above-treeline bald mountain offers 360-degree views with nothing blocking the horizon. It’s one of the most photographed elopement locations in Western NC right now, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.
Best for: Above-treeline views, golden hour, wildflower season in summer
5. DuPont State Recreational Forest
DuPont State Forest near Brevard, NC is famous for its stunning waterfalls. Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, and High Falls are all within hiking distance of each other. A waterfall elopement in DuPont is romantic, lush, and unlike anything else in the state. It’s also incredibly versatile for photography with the forest, river, and falls all within reach.
Best for: Waterfall elopements, lush greenery, spring and early summer
6. Roan Mountain and Carvers Gap
Sitting right on the Tennessee/North Carolina border, Roan Mountain and Carvers Gap offer wide open grassy balds with wildflowers in summer and stunning golden light year round. The Appalachian Trail runs right through here, making it a dream location for outdoorsy couples who want their elopement to feel like a true adventure.
Best for: Wildflowers, Appalachian Trail lovers, summer elopements
What to Know Before You Go
Check permits. Some locations like the Blue Ridge Parkway require a free permit for elopements and photography. I can help guide you through this process!
Plan for weather. Mountain weather in NC can change quickly. Always have a backup plan and trust your photographer to know alternative spots nearby.
Go at golden hour. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to shoot in the mountains. The light is soft, warm, and absolutely magical.
Pack layers. Even in summer, mountain elevations in Western NC can be surprisingly cool, especially at sunrise.
Hire a local photographer. This is the most important tip of all. A photographer who knows these locations will know exactly where to stand, when the light hits best, and how to make the most of your time there.
